Cardiff Gang Show is an activity run jointly by the Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan Scout Area and Girlguiding Cardiff and East Glamorgan County. The Gang Show is put on every two years in November at the New Theatre Cardiff. We also put on a pantomime in the alternate year to the main show.

Our cast is made up Cubs, Brownies, Scouts, Guides, Explorers, Senior section, Young leaders, Scout Network, and Leaders. The Show has been awarded the coveted Red Gang Show scarf by Scout HQ. Cardiff Gang Show has their own song, which they sing in the finale at the end of the show. “This is Gang Show from the land of Song”

Auditions take place in the April / May before the November show and rehearsals start in June and re-commence in September after a break during August.

Next Gang show
The next Gang Show is in the New Theatre, Cardiff from Wednesday 17 November to Saturday 20 November 2010.

We are looking for about 120 cast members from Scouting and Guiding and selection will be based on your performance at audition. Everyone has the same chance of being selected and no preference will be given to those who have been in previous shows. No preparation is required for the audition which will be a workshop including song, acting and dance.

Auditions are on Sunday 18 April 2010 at Whitchurch Lower School, Off Manor Way, Cardiff.

The History of Gang Show

Ralph ReaderIn 1931, Ralph Reader, a Rover Scout who had already made his mark in theatre in the USA and London, was asked to write a Scout based amateur variety show to help raise money for a swimming pool at Downe Scout Camp.

Initially the show did not have a title but during a rehearsal break, Reader recalled later, he asked a cast member if everyone was ready to which the response was Aye, Aye Skip, the gang's all here. The first production, under the title The Gang's All Here ran between 30th October and 1st November, 1932 at the Scala Theatre in central London.

Despite the fact that the show was not a sell out, enough money was raised to fund the swimming pool and the show was well received. Baden Powell, the founder of scouting, approached Reader and persuaded him to produce another show in 1933. This show was produced with the title The Gang Comes Back and ran for a week.

A tradition had been born and Reader continued to write and produce the London Gang Show. In 1934 the show became known as The Gang Show and the song Crest of a Wave was performed for the first time becoming over the years the Show's iconic song internationally.

Members of Gang Show are identified by a distinctive red scarf this is the accepted symbol of Gang Show all over the world.
