Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan (CATVOG) is one of 120 Counties/Areas in the United Kingdom. Our boundaries stretch from the East of Cardiff to almost Bridgend in the West. The M4 runs along the northern border and to the South you have the Bristol Channel.
We're one of the smallest geographic Areas in Wales - but we pack in the members. With nearly 4,000 members in the Area we support Scouting in over 60 Groups spread across five Districts.
The Area Team exists to support Scouting. From our mountain leaders to our newsletter editor, or from our leader trainers to the administrators at RER House, our goal is to provide better Scouting for more young people. Among our weaknesses - we're not clairvoyant. If you need help or support - please ask!
If you would like to know more about what we have been doing in the past year, then please download our annual report (PDF 4Mb).

Sue Ryan
I joined Scouting in 1968 as a very quiet, nervous young lady who believed what the book said! I ‘inherited’ 36 Cub Scouts and the book said that if I stood in the middle of the hall, raised my hand in the air and shouted ‘Pack Pack Pack’ the Cub Scouts would get into a circle and be absolutely silent! Some hope of that! Anyway, I survived the first night, on my own I might add (wouldn’t be allowed now!) , and haven’t looked back since!
I was Cub Scout Leader at the 33rd Cardiff (Marquiis of Bute’s Own) Scout Group until 1972 when I was appointed Group Scout Leader. We didn’t manage to appoint a CSL so I ended up doing both jobs until I left the Group in 1989, fully intending to take a break from Scouting! However, the 1st Cardiff, based in Butetown, was in danger of closing so I agreed to help them out and started running Cubs there – a challenge indeed - I had gone from a Roman Catholic Group to one which had all races and creeds in it – what an eye opener! A certain DESC was actually one of my Cubs! I remained with the 1st for just over a year and then took an ADC (Leader Training) role in Dinas District.
In 1989 I also took over the role of Registrar of the Training Team and it was from that that my love of Leader Training developed. I worked hard and overcame many fears to be appointed a Leader Trainer and was the last person in CATVOG to receive the Wood Badge with 4 beads! On the introduction of the then, new training scheme, I was the first in CATVOG to receive a Certificate in Competency in Presenting.
Whereas training has played a big part in my Scouting life, I have held appointments as District Commissioner in Cardiff South East District and Area Training Manager. I have always been involved in many events organized in CATVOG.
I think that the experience I have had in the various roles will stand me in good stead for my latest challenge – that of Area Commissioner!
