It can all be a bit confusing when you first join us as Scouting has lots of terms and acronyms which are difficult to understand! There is also some essential information that we need to pass on to you from the very beginning. This is what happens:
Getting Started!
Getting Started must be completed within 5 months and includes Module 1 (Essential Information) and Module 3 (Tools for the Job for Leaders). At the end of each Module you will be given a list from which you choose 3 things to demonstrate what you have gained from the training (validating your training).
Both Modules will be run and validated by people in your District. You will also be invited to meet members of the District Appointments
Sub Committee who will talk to you about what you hope to get from Scouting and what you are bringing into it (you'll be surprised at how much talent YOU have!).
On the same evening you will complete Module 1 training which includes:
Understanding the Purpose, Principles and Methods of The Scout Association
Understanding the importance of The Scout Association's Child Protection Policy and your role in protecting young people from harm
Identifying the main methods of preventing and reporting accidents
Identifying the support available to help you in your Scouting role
Getting support from other people
Working within the policies and rules of the Movement.
You will be given lots of resources to take away with you covering this Module and Module 3 for those of you working with young people.
You will also be given the dates of Module 3 training.
Module 3
Module 3 training will include:
Recognising the main features of your Section
Participating in the planning and running of Section meetings
Using games as a key part of the programme
Knowing what should happen at a Section meeting and why
Understanding your role in Scouting
Module 4
Module
4 is Tools for the Job for Managers and is run by the Area Training Team. Dates and application forms can be downloaded from the resources page.
Module 4 includes:
Understanding your responsibilities in providing effective management and support of adults in Scouting
Recognizing the main features of each Section
Identifying, and accessing The Scout Association's policies, guidance and rules
Carrying out the job within the procedures and policies of The Scout Association
Supporting the development of young people within Scouting
Completion of Getting Started
Once you have completed ‘Getting Started’ you will need to discuss with your Group Scout Leader whether you wish to take out a Warrant (become a uniformed leader) or be a Section Assistant (no uniform and no further training unless you want!). If you take out a Warrant then you will need to embark on Wood Badge training and you will find details of this on this page. A Wood Badge registration form can also be downloaded. You will be presented with a ‘Getting Started’ pin badge and Certificates to show that you have completed Modules 1 and 3.
Our Training Advisers are available at Open Training Events which are held on a regular basis throughout the Area. Dates, times and venues are published on the website. We do not allocate individual Training Advisers but if you have any problems in attending an Open Training Event then please e mail us.
