Area Activity Teams
Water Activities

The Area Water activities team helps members of the Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network participate in Water Activities. You do not have to be an expert to take part in these activities if you want to know more contact a member of the team. There are a series of Fact sheets available that cover all the scout regulations associated with water based activities.
The team consists of people that have an interest and experience of a range of water based activities and if the sport you are interested in is not supported directly, will assist by providing further information.
During the year the Water Activities team provides Canoe training, canoe slalom and river trips, annual fishing competition and information on events such as Power boating, Dragon boating, Sailing and Diving. |
Mountaineering Activities

The Mountaineering Activities Advisor is supported by a team of fully authorised instructors and assessors that cover all aspects of mountaineering, hill walking and climbing.
A programme is produced of days and weekends when the team are available to act as leaders, instruct or assess members of the movement. Some team members are also prepared, with reasonable notice, to go out at other times.
Members of the team are also prepared to give short talks on mountaineering issues to groups about mountaineering. |
Shooting Activities

We have a team of instructors that are available to instruct rifle shooting to Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Scout Network and Fellowship in the Area. The team has its own equipment which can be hired including air rifles and pistols.
In addition to running the taster sessions, the team also runs a number of events throughout the year. On the regular calendar is the field target shoot, postal shoot and Scout and Explorer badge courses.
We are also in a position to train adults so they can run rifle shooting with their Scouts. |
Archery Activities

The area is able to offer have a go archery sessions to Cub age and upwards. A team of instructors across the area provide this to our leaders both indoors and outdoors at our local campsites.
A programme of badge courses are also run throughout the year for Scouts and Explorers. |

Meet the AAC Activities
Mark Glendinning
I started Scouting when I was 6 and joined Beavers at the 4th Dovercourt Sea Scout group in Tendring, Essex and have been involved ever since. Progressing through the sections I gained my Chief Scout Award and Challenge in Scouts, moving into Venture Scouts (later Scout Network) I obtained my Queens Scout Award and attended the annual St Georges Day parade at Windsor.
In 1999 I moved to Cardiff to study for a Civil Engineering degree and graduated in 2003 with a MEng first class honours degree. During university I was involved with the Student Scout and Guide Organisation (SSAGO) as a local club chair and also as national treasurer. In 2000 I completed my MLTB training and was invited to join the Essex Scout Mountaineering Activity Team (ESMAT). Continuing my studies I completed a PhD in Geoenvironmental engeineering also at Cardiff University before joining Parsons Brinckerhoff in Cardiff and a Structural and Geatechnical engineer in thei Cardiff office.
After my undergraduate degree I was able to commit more time to Scouting and joined the 1st Barry Sea Scout group taking up an ASL position and getting involved with the water activities in the group.
In June 2005 I was approached to join the Area team on the activities side and was appointed AAC Activities with the responsibility for the activities in the Area including all the adventurous activities and nights away. I was responsible for the organisation and running of the Area activity event 'Day in the Bay' which saw all sections from the entire Area come together as one. I enjoy my outdoor activities from sailing, climbing and mountaineering and look forward to improving the activities within CATVOG.
